The Bryant Family Scholarship
The Bryant’s – Richard, an Architect, and Nancy, an OSU professor – instilled the values of hard work and the possibilities to those obtaining a higher education degree. Expectations were high but their son Eric wasn’t very academically interested during high school. In 1989, Eric began taking classes at LBCC to “figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up”. Eric continued to work while attending LBCC to make ends meet and met a fellow LBCC student who was in student government. Eric began volunteering at events and decided to run in the upcoming elections. Eric served as a Representative and subsequently the Moderator of the ASLBCC Student Government. While serving as Moderator, Eric discovered that the local chapter of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa had disbanded. Eric spearheaded the re-chartering of Phi Theta Kappa at LBCC because he saw a need to recognize those high-achieving students as one last thing he could do for his fellow students These co-curricular activities had a profound impact on Eric’s view of the College and in his mind, LBCC changed from being simply a school to a home.
After graduating Eric continued to pursue a Communication degree at OSU while working at Hewlett Packard in Corvallis. Eric worked at HP until 2003. As the economy changed and HP continued to downsize, Eric began looking for his 3rd career; a partner in his father’s architectural firm. Eric and his father worked on several projects in Oregon until 2009. Yet again, the economy was changing, construction was waning, and a lot of people were looking for new skills and work; enrollment at LBCC was booming. With this enrollment growth, LBCC was looking to increase its online course offerings and hired Eric in 2009. Eric has come back home and found his fourth and final career as an eLearning system administrator and faculty trainer. He finds great joy in helping both faculty and students find their passion through the use of technology and is continually looking for ways to bring equity and a sense of belonging to students who may have not had the easiest journey getting here. Eric and his family are dedicated to providing financial assistance to college students.
